Braved the bitter San Francisco cold this afternoon to pick up a few provisions on Polk Street and walked right into two products I've been searching for at Real Food market on Polk Street. They are:
1. Sheese brand Vegan cheese from Scotland. As of this writing, it ain't cheap. About $9 for 8 ounces. I've been tracking this product down since Colleen Patrick Goudreau mentioned it on a Podcast and it has seemed that up until now I was going to have to order it from a shop in Portland. I got the Blue Style because I thought it would be the toughest to get right. They do make mozarella and a couple cheddars too. Well, I do like it a lot. It is best if allowed to soften a bit and then 'mooshed up' (for lack of a better term). I can't wait to try its 'meltability'. The package suggests shredding onto pastas and salads. (btw, have recently seen two Food network 'stars' shred frozen blue onto salads). But for the definite test I spread some on a cracker for the ultimate cheese snob, Harrison. She loves it! I rest my case.
2. Sweet & Sara marshmallows. She calls them Vanilla Marshmallow Meltaways actually, and cost about $5 for an 8.5 ounce package/about 18 marshmallows. Vegans don't want to eat regular marshmallows because of the ingredient gelatin. Gelatin is a mixed bag of animal parts, like hooves and snouts, ground and boiled to the mass we call gelatin that can make products, well, gel. Sweet's vegan marshmallows are creamier and denser, less fluffy, than regular marshmallows and require refrigeration. Per the usual, Harrison (not generally a sweets fan) was my tester. She said, and I quote, "I think I like the taste even better than regular marshmallows". Wow! I can't wait to make a rocky road ice cream or cookie or smore or dip cubes in dark chocolate.....................
3. And finally, while you're looking for an adorable new Apron to replace that stained schmata you've been wearing while slaving in the kitchen, check out Anthropologie. Yep that Anthropologie, with the great funky cute clothing. My latest favorite is the yellow Stockholm Floral number for $28.
